Arnel Pineda disrespects Philippine National Anthem!

No one is above the law!

Nasabi ko na lahat ng kailangan kong sabihin dito: The Philippine National Anthem is not a pop song!

Arnel should stick to singing Perry songs for Journey.

Though i agreed with you before, now i have to side with freedom of speech :) Although we're also free to lambast and give them a lot of crap for having an awful rendition :D

  3. Freedom of speech covers the National Anthem?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Alberto Pamintuan III15.3.10

It covers EVERYTHING, with specific and strict exceptions like libel, obscenity, inciting to certain crimes and national security issues :)

freedom of speech is not absolute. when will we really be able to respect our own national symbols?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I agree Estan. When respect for our national symbols are at stake, freedom of speech takes a back seat.

Batch, did Arnel Pineda break any law? I mean, people have been doing their own versions of Lupang Hinirang. But is there really a law against this? I personally didn't like Arnel's version.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yes batch, there is a law. And the law is clear. Yung problem lang is that it was sang in the U.S.

Although if a case is filed (disregarding the issue of jurisdiction), I doubt the NHI will win. The SC might even declare the law unconstitutional. There was a case which is sort of related, where the issue was school kids not participating in the singing of the National Anthem on account of religious beliefs. The Court weighed the right to free exercise of religion against the "respect for national symbols," and decided in favor of the school children. The Court held the right to free exercise more important. That right has been said to be related to free speech, so I'm sure the Court will also give more importance to the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  10. That is so wrong! It's like saying anyone is free to make their own religion and use it as an excuse to be exempted from respecting and loving our country, its symbols and what it stands for. I should have made a religion in college that prohibited us from military training. Haha!

And yeah, his version sucked big time. Sayang. I think he even said before that he'll stick to the original version pa naman.

But it also depends on the court. The case i cited was a reversal of a previous one. Minsan conservative and court, minsan hinde.

I think our National Anthem is perfect as it is. 4/4, march, like how any grade school kid would sing it.

    ang masama pa,
    arnel was,
    as randy jackson woud say:
    PITCHY!!!

    the NHI should pre-approve
    all subsequent renditions
to get rid of this problem

Maybe then we should take cue from the Olympics. The official recorded National Anthems of participating countries are the only versions used--instead of live singers. It's even less expensive --no more professional fees and flying in singers for the event.

It hits the wall of jurisdiction. If they're here in the Philippines doing that, wala silang takas.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Arnel sang the "Lupang Hinirang" proudly and with respect. The only thing that was wrong in his interpretation of the anthem was that he didn't follow what was written in the book.

I think it's about time to change the rule. Ang mga americano nga kinakanta nila ang "Star Spangled Banner" the way they want it, as long as they sing it with pride and respect, why can't we? Read my previous post.

May freedom of speech in Filipino " Masama yung rendisyon nung pambansang awit puede pa kung journey na lang ang kantahin." Pitchy all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just because the Americans do it is not reason for us to follow suit! If you want to be an American, be my guest. But Filipinos must respect our National Anthem by singing it properly.

Remember that our National Anthem is a march. It is reflects the revolutionary nature of the times it was composed in. It should not be converted into a pop song.

well, they might have issued a statement, may ginawa ba after that? plus ilang ulit na ito after that, it's the same issue over and over and over and over..... without an action from them. kaya wala silang silbe.

  28. phil laws apply to people who are within its jurisdiction-unless the law says otherwise. since arnel and a host of other signers sang it not on phil soil, he cannot be held liable for not singing it in the prescribed manner

    ReplyDelete
  29. Which is why we're giving him a taste of his own medicine, expressing our own freedom of speech by lambasting him for disrespecting the National Anthem.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think the NHI should learn to adapt even a little bit to the changing times. Im not talking about losing our heritage to the 21st century, i simply mean that talents of different kinds will have different ways of interpreting things like our national anthem. I definitely think that Arnel, like the others in the past, did not intend to insult or disrespect our country and its people. Besides, c'mon, it was a good 20 seconds or so longer than NHI expected, is that really so wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  31. The NHI is bound by law! You want it to adapt? Then lobby in Congress to amend the law.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well it wouldn't be the only law that needs to be updated! In this country, there are loads of imperfections, its just sad that the manner of which we are backwards is quite sad and pathetic. Im not talking about changes everything, but clearly, there is room for growth.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If we were to subscribe to the national anthem law, then I suggest we arrest ALL DEAF PEOPLE as well. R.A. 8491 states that Lupang Hinirang "shall always be SUNG in the national language" regardless if performed inside or outside the Philippines. Since sign language is not a verbal language, and thus cannot be used for singing, then ALL DEAF PEOPLE WHO SIGN THE NATIONAL ANTHEM SHOULD BE ARRESTED, PENALIZED AND THROWN INTO JAIL.

That is the law as written.

    ReplyDelete
  34. haha! arnel pineda "journey-ed" lupang hinirang!

i could have swore i saw him drown in his saliva during that last note.

  35. Anonymous16.3.10

Arnel Pineda promised in an interview before the boxing match that he'd sing the national anthem the correct way. I guess that only means the guy doesn't even know how the original arrangement of the national anthem sounds. I wish they wouldn't experiment with the national anthem. The original arrangement and composition is perfect as it is.

As for the artist's right to freedom of expression when it comes to singing the national anthem, I really doubt the Supreme Court would rule it more important that every citizens duty to respect our national symbols. It does not hold the same weight as the right of citizens to freedom of religious belief.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Ivan here. Why should the law adapt to how people wanted to sing our national anthem?

It's the law, follow the law. Sing the national anthem in a marching tone and correct tempo. Who are these singers to change how the national anthem is sang? They weren't the ones who fought for our country to achieve independence.

And stop comparing how the Americans sing their anthem, USA has a different law from us. If they wanted their anthem to be sang in different ways then let them be. Our anthem is BOUNDED by a law that EVERYONE must follow. No exemptions.

    That's all.

what was the inspiration of jose palma and julian felipe in creating "Lupang Hinirang?" it was the years of subjugation and slavery that filipnos suffered under foreign rule. when lupang hinirang was in the process of being composed, we filipinos were slaves, indios, little brown monkeys to the spaniards, the americans and the japanese. perhaps, the next time you sing the philippine national anthem, think of how life was like living as slaves under spanish, american and japanese rule in your own country before you try singing lupang hinirang like an american rockstar.

  39. since i do not fully know ALL the Philippine laws, i do have a couple of innocent/ stupid questions for you guys:

    1. is there other laws which penalize the people for not wearing baro't saya or kamiseta de chino, or the maria clara dress? these clothes depict who we really are as Filipinos, just like the national anthem. but... why is it acceptable in our society to wear revealing clothes?

    2. does NHI criticize other people who sing in other events(not pacquiao events)? we only hear issues everytime there is a pacman fight. what if this boxer retires? does this mean that NHI will also be dissolved?

    3. Does NHI do a spot check in public places such as movie houses, schools, and offices to ensure that we are all singing the anthem properly?

    4. given only two options, which is better: singing the anthem in its original form with a blank, expressionless face, or having a bit of rendition but full of pride and emotions?

Puro kayo LAW! Anong LAW? Binaboy ba ni Arnel yung anthem? Di naman ah. Kayo kaya ang kumanta nun and by the way, memorize nyo ba ang Lupang Hinirang?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Comments like the one above can explain why our country is going nowhere. Disregard for laws and respect for our national symbols down the drain.

    ReplyDelete
  42. You guys all have solid points, and of course how can you argue with the law? I too wish that all laws were implemented in such a way that would advance our country and move it forwards, but in regards to this...i dont think so. Its this type of thinking that will keep us backwards forever. Let it go man, i love our country and am Pro-Laws, but for crying out loud, let it go. Arnel sang it without any disrespect and from his heart, why bother with the fucking metronome and number of seconds the song should be?!

    ReplyDelete
  43. We're talking about him changing the melody of the National Anthem. That's the main issue, not the metronome speed.

Changing the melody to make the last part of the National Anthem higher is obvious disrespect in an attempt to get attention and wow his audience. As a world-renowned singer, he didn't have to do that. Let's not use to National Anthem to show off high pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  44. On the contrary, NHI targeted him for the beats per minute being too slow from the one originally written and stated in the law books. Furthermore, i seriously doubt that Arnel was trying to wow the audiences around the world by changing the melody at the end, i think that came out naturally..too bad backwards thinkers cannot accept that he too is human and has his own way of doing things. I just think its sad, rather than appreciate the fact that he is now world famous and proud to be pinoy, its us pinoys pa that have to give him the hard time..sayang!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm proud of him as a singer. Kudos to Arnel Pineda for making us proud to be Filipinos with his stint in Journey! But I'm condemning the act of changing the melody. I cannot let that pass. Don't jump into hasty generalizations there. Him being a world-class singer is not an excuse to condone his change of the melody.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Issue over after he accepted his mistake and issued a sincere apology

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous24.3.10

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anonymous27.3.10

    ano and depenisyon ng tono?

May palusot lagi. Di nalang sundan ang batas!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous28.3.10

with all due respect, laws should be interpreted as it is. walang pilosopo dito. bakit? professional singers lang ba ang sakop ng batas na dapat tamang-tama ang tyempo at tono? hindi po palusot yun sir..
i must agrree with one of the post that NHI is not even randomly checking everyone who sings the anthem? pang National event lang ba ang batas na ito?
as long as yoou sing it with pride, PINOY pa rin ang tawag sayo.

  53. From Estan Cabigas: qoute freedom of speech is not absolute. when will we really be able to respect our own national symbols? unqoute
I agree with Estan. It doesn't necessarily mean that with freedom of speech, you too can alter the original rendetion of the National Anthem. I'd been an avid fun of Arnel Pineda and was very proud of his becoming an international celebrity. But after he sung the National Anthem, I was so disgusted.
Another one from jeri: qoute It's the law, follow the law. Sing the national anthem in a marching tone and correct tempo. Who are these singers to change how the national anthem is sang? They weren't the ones who fought for our country to achieve independence. unqoute
So true. Is it not difficult to just follow what is original? There were already contreversies from the past, hindi pa ba sila natututo?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous29.3.10

That issue should not be over yet. As far as I know, Arnel Pineda accepted his mistake apologized sincerely to the people through Philippine Television. Ang sabi nyo kasi "Issue over after he accepted his mistake and issued a sincere apology".
